3-D Graphite Lattice

Graphite is made up of only carbon atoms, the same as diamond, but arranged differently.

In Brief

In graphite, each carbon atom is bonded strongly to three neighbors, in a planar structure. Then many planes are stacked, loosely bonded, and slide easily over each other.

Remarks

There are other pure-carbon structures too, with different properties. The next page shows a compound, which must have been around forever, but was only recently disovered.
